Blower Door Test

Blower Door
Blower door testing is now required by many energy codes depending on your state and municipality. Energy raters use blower door tests to help determine a home’s air tightness. There are many reasons for establishing the proper building tightness. A few examples would be to:
- Reduce energy consumption caused by air leakage
- Avoid moisture condensation issues
- Avoid uncomfortable drafts caused by cold air leaking in from the outside
A blower door is a powerful fan that goes into the frame of an exterior door panel to measure the air-tightness of a building . The fan pulls air out of the home, lowering the air pressure. The outside air pressure flows inside through all unsealed cracks and openings. The test determines the air infiltration rate of a building by measuring the amount of air needed to keep a house at an elevated pressure of 50 Pascal. That measurement is used to infer how many leaks are present.
